In 1892, Francis Bellamy, an ordained Baptist minister who was his Boston church because of his fiery socialist sermons, composed a pledge that expressed loyalty not only to a nation but to a radical idea: “liberty and justice for all.”
More than 100 years later, we speak these powerful words before sports competitions and other events in solidarity with the idea that we enjoy our freedom as Americans together, that we are equals in the eyes of the law, and that we stand as one, shoulder to shoulder, on behalf of this nation: We the People.
